kappi

When dawn breaks "Thirupalli ezhuchi"will be chanted in temples. But for the man to chant these
verses so early in the morning, it requires stimulus. Coffee is that stimulus for him and for most of us. For most of us, morning starts with coffee. The way, coffee is prepared is very interesting. The correct combination of coffee powder is the secret of a good coffee. These days there are people like wine tasters who can identify good wine, but people who could do that with coffee have been there since stone age! People from Mambalam of Chennai are generally experts in preparing good coffee. They mix A seeds with B seeds to get A+B that makes good coffee. Atleast 10grams of powder per cup is the formulae. By pouring hot water into the powder- filled-filter you get a good extract within few minutes. It is recommended that the filter you use be made of brass filter instead of stainless steel. Milk from a single cow is preferred, but unfortunately you have only "Aavin" milk available to you in cities. Don't
loose heart, you can still have good coffee even with that.

My mother used to grind the seeds everyday. We had a hand grinding machine at home. In
early morning when the seeds are roasted and then ground, the aroma that emanates is fantastic. Only by doing this ritual will you get fresh fresh powder. Buying and then storing already-ground coffee powder for a week was not favoured by my mother.

One of my relative, whenever he visits chennai, goes to Hotel Saravana Bhavan just for his coffee. A visit to Chennai without Saravana's coffee is considered to be a useless visit by him. Some people wake up in the early morning only to have the taste of coffee. In Triplicane, for example, the arrival of milk van will create such a joyous atmosphere. If it's arrival is delayed then all other work will be put to rest. Some house wife's are living only on coffee. My mother wants a cofffee at 5'o'clock in the morning,
and then a second one after the morning tiffin. My brother used to have this liquid every now and then.

Even while arranging a marriage the first condition put forth by the in-laws is that the guests should
be given good coffee. While seeing a girl for my marriage, my mother rejected one girl because the girl doesn't drink coffee. While coffee is considered as a elite one tea is not. It is disrespect to give
tea to the guest in most Tamil people's house. Hot coffee will be there for all type of functions. If it is offered through out the function then it will be the talk of the town. The myth attached to coffee by some people is that too much coffee will change your skin colour. As South India is attached to its coffee, it may be explain as to why South people are different in colour than their cousins from the North.
சூடா காப்பி சக்கரை கம்மி கொஞ்சம் டிகாசன் are some phrases attached to coffee. The bad part about drinking coffee will be described no. The way some people drink coffee is irritating; the glass will be lifted 2ft above shoulder level, the "davara" two feet below and the liquid will be shunted from glass to davara making a lot of noise. Some sip it making irritating sound and also creating a fear that they may swallow the tumbler along with the liquid in the process. Guess  how many cups I might have consumed while writting this article?
