Everybody now talks about employable graduates. Most of them are not employable, the industry says so. Is it because of our educational system? I started thinking about this, when I recently had to fill up some forms. Filling up any type of form (appplication form etc) by itself is very difficult.Even though you are a graduate, it requires training to complete any sort of form. The basic things needed in daily life should be taught in schools. Ordinary things like filling up money order forms, railway reservation booking, college application forms should be taught in schools. I know engineers who don't know how to change an electrical fuse, who are unable to change a starter in a tube light. Most of us do have difficulty in filling up forms needed to open a bank account.
Moving back to the topic of filling up any sort of forms, even where to sign in these forms requires knowledge. In some forms yours faithfully will be there, in some signature will be there. You have to sign above signature and below yours faithfully. How many educated people know this? You can ask this in a quiz program. Any government application form can only be filled up correctly by the person in the counter; even the Officer in charge will have problems with it.
For instance, I will tell you about the passport application form. The first question in the form is about your name. It may perhaps look simple, but it is not. You have to fill up your name and surname. For most of us in Tamilnadu, expansion of your initial is surname. In north they don’t have initials, but in Tamilnadu, initial is a must. If your father’s name is Ram and yours is Babu, what is your name? Is it Ram Babu or Babu Ram? You will be called Babu ram, but you have to write it as RAM BABU! (in the application atleast). Initials need not be your father’s name, it may be your caste name or your village name, but it should have been written in your birth certificate to be able to use it in the application form.
This name issue is even more complicated for women. Most women include their husband’s name as their initial after marriage. Why they do so, no one knows. Men do not add their wife’s name but women do. Lots of talk about women liberation are there, but why do women want their husband’s name as initial? It creates lot of legal problems. Change of initial require notary public’s certificate. If you divorce your husband, once again you have to change your initial and that of your children too. With all these problems, if you can fill up the form successfully you can be given graduation by the best university with out any examination. If filling up a application itself is so difficult, how about doing your official work?
Most people have cell phones, laptops, internet , but all are not well versed with them.
We get our degree certificate by repeating what is written in books without understanding. Practical knowledge is almost nil. So where is the problem? Better our educationists understand this and take remedial action.
